I sailed away from a conventional life. Literally. Fresh out of college and primed to pursue an editorial career, I veered from my path and took a job as a dancer on cruise ships. The opportunity didn’t come out of the blue, after all, dance was my first love and what I’ve known longer than anything. What did blindside me was how travel would change my life.
As I watched a 9-5 job, health insurance, a long-term relationship, and possibly a few rungs of career ladder-climbing potential float away in the wake, there was one main sensation that rose to the surface: being lost.
I know what you’re thinking: Didn’t I just say that travel changed my life? I did. And it did. In some ways it was immediate and exhilarating in all the wonderful ways travel moves people: perspective-broadening, eye-opening, heart-breaking, mind-expanding.
It wasn’t until I’d left ships to attempt some sort of “real life”—first a gig in Las Vegas, then a move to NYC paired with a career move to copywriting, followed by a certification in holistic wellness—that I realized what was missing from my first travel experiences: purposeful reflection, self-care, groundedness and mindfulness. In other words, a sense of being at home with myself in the world.
My passport’s been stamped many more times since my cruise ship days. Travel is now ingrained into my being. But having seen 60+ countries so far, I know it’s not about the number of borders you cross, it’s the mindset you carry with you that leads to the most personal transformation. That’s why I created Wanderwell. I believe that when you combine travel with a growth mindset, that’s when the world really begins to open. Turns out, helping others navigate these waters is what I set sail to do.
Let’s Wanderwell together, shall we?
